Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a type of anxiety disorder caused by stressful, frightening and upsetting events, such as car accidents, violent personal attacks and childhood experiences. It can develop either weeks after an event or take years to become apparent.
Somebody suffering from this disorder often has flashbacks to the event they suffered and they often experience feelings of isolation, guilt and irritability. It’s believed to affect 1 in 3 people after a traumatic event, though nobody knows why some people suffer from PTSD and others don’t.
Fortunately, counselling has been shown to be highly effective, even years after an event. Trauma focused cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) has been shown to be particularly effective.
